Xtreme Makeover: Meal Edition

Who wants to play Xtreme Meal Makeover????

Here's how to play:
  1. Think of a meal you typically eat or often enjoy eating that isn't the healthiest or could be healthier (or even a meal you think is healthy but you aren't totally sure.)
  2. Submit the contents of said meal to me via a comment to this post.
  3. If you have any special considerations or specific dietary goals, please share those as well. For instance, if you are counting calories, trying to eat more fruits and veggies, trying to eat less processed food, watching your salt intake, diabetic, etc, let me know.
  4. If your meal is chosen, and most probably will be, I will provide details about the quality of your meal and suggestions for improvement based on your goals and considerations (or in general if no special considerations are given.)
GOOD LUCK!

  1. ok this isn't really a meal persay, but breakfast just in general. What are some good breakfast meals that are super quick and easy to make in the morning before work, but that are filling enough so that you don't end up eating your entire lunch and snacks before noon :-) We find that even eating cereal isn't filling enough. We will eat that at 6:45am and then finish our lunches we packed before lunchtime. So...suggestions?

  2. For breakfast I would recommend having some complex carbs, some protein, and a piece of fruit. If you like eating cereal, but find you get hungry quickly, make sure your cereal has a lot of fiber (at least 5 grams per serving) and maybe some protein too. Then, add some fruit either to the cereal or have it on the side. I have a pear, apple, or a cup of fresh fruit for breakfast every morning along with the rest of my meal, and it really helps fill me up.

    Some ideas:
Oatmeal with fruit and chopped nuts.
(I keep my packets at work and make it when I don't have time to eat at home.)

English muffin with a slice of cheese or turkey or whatever meat you like, or if you have time, a scrambled egg, with fruit on the side.

Don't forget about toast and bagels...just try to choose those with fiber and not loaded with empty calories. Try them with a teaspoon of peanut butter....and fruit.

If you can scramble a quick egg, throw it into a tortilla with a little cheese and salsa for a breakfast wrap.

I like eating yogurt or cottage cheese as part of my breakfast. I either buy the individuals if they are on sale, or I portion it out the night before if I buy the larger container, and take it with me to the office. Try them with a little fruit and granola or cereal for a parfait.

Also, are you eating a mid morning snack? I also eat at snack at 10am so that I don't get too hungry before lunch. I usually just have some pretzels. But if you find you get really hungry, add some protein too. Laughing cow cheese triangles are great or a string cheese. Or have a yogurt. Or some nuts.

Otherwise, I would consider that you might be so hungry because you aren't eating enough (quantity), aren't eating enough that is filling (fiber and protein), or that you might be eating out of boredom or stress. I find that I have a hard time resisting the urge to snack at work in the mornings. So I have planned out snack/meal times. I eat a snack at 10 and usually eat lunch at noon. If I know I'm gonna eat a later lunch, I'll have a slightly bigger snack. Then, I typically have a small snack around 3:30 to hold me off until I can get home and make dinner. On days that I run at night, I have a bigger afternoon snack.

If you want to tell me what you currently eat for breakfast (name of cereal, etc), then I might be able to give you some more specific suggestions.

    Thanks for playing!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Thanks lady...I went out and bought english muffins (the whole grain kind) last night. Ran late this morning so didn't get it test it out but I plan to this week. Hopefully get my butt out of bed in time to scramble an egg or something. I hope the whole grain muffins are good...they looked kinda weird. Anyway, any suggestions on what type of nuts are good? Are some better than others? Nuts are expensive so wanna get the most bang for my buck. I like almost all nuts. Oh...and what I eat for breakfast...usually a bowl of cheerios with skim milk, or a chewy granola bar (ya know...the kind that has no nutritional value lol)

  4. If you don't have time to scramble an egg, just toast the muffin then put a slice of turkey and a slice of cheese on it. Or just use some good, all fruit jelly.

If all you are eating is a bowl of cherrios or a granola bar, you probably need to eat more for breakfast. Add some fruit at the very least. And nuts are a good idea too.

As for nuts, I would go with whatever you prefer, or go for a variety. Are you near a Whole Foods? One thing I like about WF is that you can buy nuts (as well as many other items) in bulk, which makes it much cheaper. You can buy a little bit of walnuts, some pistachios, whatever. (And both of those are great nutritional choices). The only thing that folks need to remember with nuts is that a portion is very small and that they do contain a lot of fat, even though it is "good" fat. For those not watching their weight/calories or those who need to eat more so they don't get too hungry throughout the day, you don't have to worry about that as much. But for everyone else, remember that 1 ounce is a portion...which is only a few walnuts, for example.

And you are right per the chewy granola bars. They have no nutritional value but do have a lot of sugar. If that's all you eat for breakfast, you are definitely going to be ravenous by lunch time. But there are better granola bar choices out there, that have less sugar and more fiber, if that is something you like. But remember to add a glass of milk and some fruit or something else to sustain you throughout the morning.
